Russian warships arrive in Venezuela, Russian media says

A group of Russian ships from the Northern Fleet have arrived in the Venezuelan port city of La Guaira, Russian state news agency RIA reported on Tuesday (2).

There is still no confirmation whether the ships that docked in Venezuela are the same Russian fleet that carried out missile exercises in the Atlantic Ocean and visited Cuba in June.

Russian warships visited Cuba

On Wednesday, June 12, Russian Navy ships arrived at the port of Havana.

Three Russian ships and a nuclear-powered submarine paid a five-day official visit to the island, just 90 miles (145 km) from the United States. The first to arrive were a fuel tanker, the Akademik Pashin, and a tugboat, the Nikolay Chiker, while a Russian navy frigate and a nuclear-powered submarine waited at sea.

The United States and Cuba said the operation posed no threat but was widely seen as a show of Russian force as tensions rise over the war in Ukraine.

Earlier, a Russian naval frigate and a nuclear-powered submarine conducted missile exercises in the Atlantic Ocean while en route to Cuba.

The exercises of the Kazan submarine and the Admiral Gorshkov warship (Admiral Gorshkov) involved firing high-precision missiles at simulated enemy targets at a distance of more than 600 km.

The Admiral Gorshkov has also conducted training in recent days in response to an air strike, the Russian ministry said.
