Russians run for the last burger from McDonalds – Video with workers dancing on their last shift

A war has multifaceted losses and these do not come only on the battlefield. The economy is a day-to-day battlefield and employees of foreign-owned companies closing down (or being forced to shut down) in Russia are suddenly hanging on a tree.

One such case is the fast food chain giant McDonalds which, (although one of the last companies in Russia to do so) ceases to operate its stores in the country, for an indefinite period, due to the war in Ukraine.

For days now, dozens of videos have been uploaded on social media and showing Russian citizens rush to the last burger, creating huge queues, before the shops put a padlock. In fact, in one of them a man was chained to the door of a store protesting the closure.

Workers dance in their last shift

In one of the chain stores, as you will see in the relevant video, the employees have just delivered the last order and they all dance and sing together for their “last day at work”. There are about 850 McDonald’s stores in Russia, with about 62,000 employees.

In recent days, the American company was facing increasing criticism because it did not follow the tactics of other food and beverage companies to leave the country after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said the conflict “caused untold suffering to innocent people” and that “we are following the world in condemning aggression and violence and praying for peace.”

McDonald’s, in a show of goodwill to its thousands of employees in Russia, promised to continue to pay wages as long as the stores were closed.
