Russians vow revenge after Ukrainian attack kills general in Moscow

A bomb attack killed Russian General Igor Kirillov, head of the country’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection troops. It is the fourth murder involving a high-ranking figure in Vladimir Putin’s army in two months.

The explosive was hidden in an electric scooter outside a residential apartment building.

The attack occurred seven kilometers from the Kremlin and was the responsibility of the Ukrainian security services. After the explosion, buildings and cars in the region were left with broken windows and damaged structures. Kirillov’s assistant Ilya Polikarpov also died at the scene.

Kirillov had been in office for more than seven years and was accused of using banned chemical weapons in the war against Ukraine. According to Volodymyr Zelensky’s government, there were almost five thousand cases of improper use of ammunition under Kirillov’s orders.

He is the highest-ranking soldier ever murdered by Ukrainians.

The Kremlin’s responses

In response, the Russians promised immediate revenge. According to Dmitry Medvedev, vice-president of the Russian Security Council, the country’s forces “will do everything to destroy the patrons of the attack created by Kiev”.

This attack is an emergency measure by Ukraine just over a month before Trump’s inauguration, trying to stop the Russian advance into its territory.

On Russia’s borders, Vladimir Putin’s army intensified offensives in Kursk province, with support from North Korean soldiers.

The Kremlin stated that it is developing new military and nuclear technologies, organizing forces for the conflict to continue next year.

Russia investigates case as “terrorist act”

Russia’s investigative committee says the investigation into the case is ongoing and that investigators, forensic experts and operational services are at the site of the explosion.

A spokesperson for the agency stated that the case was classified as a “terrorist act” and murder.

The committee also investigates “illegal arms and ammunition trafficking” related to the case.
