Most of Russia’s military gains near Mariupol are in the southern areas, according to the latest UK intelligence update.
“Russia has gained more ground in the south, near Mariupol, where fighting continues as the Russians try to take control of the port,” the UK Ministry of Defense said on Twitter on Monday.
In addition to its report, the ministry said that “there has been no significant change in the provisions of Russian Forces in occupied Ukraine”.
“The logistical shortage was compounded by a continued lack of momentum and morale among the Russian military and aggressive fighting by the Ukrainians,” he continued.
Mariupol has been the main target of the Russians due to its strategic port, having suffered constant bombing since the beginning of the invasion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday called the Russian siege of the port a “humanitarian catastrophe”, claiming Russian forces had driven more than 2,000 children out of the city as part of what Ukrainian officials described as a wave of deportations of civilians to the Russia.
The Russians accuse neo-Nazi and nationalist troops of using the population of Mariupol as a shield, as well as preventing civilians from leaving.
