Russia’s demands are “detached from reality,” says Ukrainian source

The demands of Russia are “detached from reality” and “go far beyond anything previously discussed,” said a Ukraine diplomatic source on Friday, describing conversations between representatives of the two countries in Istanbul.

“Russian demands are detached from reality and go far beyond anything previously discussed. They include ultimates for Ukraine to withdraw from its territory through a ceasefire and other unacceptable and non-constructive conditions,” the source told Reuters on anonymous condition.

“Ukraine is ready for a royal ceasefire and a genuine peace process without any preview.”

Conversations mark the first direct negotiations between the two countries in three years, after pressure from US President Donald Trump to end Europe’s most deadly conflict since World War II.

The expectations of an advance, already low, were even more shaken on Thursday (15), when Trump said there would be no advance without a meeting between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A Turkish delegation also participates in the meeting.
