Russia’s Deprivation of Suffrage and Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) at IMF Considered US-EU

The United States is committed to taking all necessary measures to prevent Russia from using its Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) in the International Monetary Fund, a US Treasury Department official told Reuters on Friday. stating that Moscow is already facing obstacles in making use of them.

Russia received $ 17 billion in SDRs from the IMF in 2021, but to spend it would have to find a partner country to exchange them for the underlying currencies in the form of an interest-bearing loan.

The US and its partners, who form a comfortable majority in the IMF’s SDR trading system, have no plans to enter into any such transaction, the US official added.

According to a European source of the Reuters agency, the European Union is considering ways for Russia to lose its voting right to make decisions in the Fund.
