O Russia's top general and chief of staff, Valery Gerasimov, visited troops fighting in the war in Ukraine to discuss next steps after the capture of the town of Avdiivka, state media reported on Wednesday (21).
President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russian troops would advance further into Ukraine to build on their battlefield success following the fall of the town of Avdiivka, where he said Ukrainian troops were forced to flee in the chaos.
Gerasimov was shown presenting medals to Russian troops involved in the seizure of Avdiivka and received a report from the commander in charge of the Russian attack on Avdiivka, Colonel-General Andrei Mordvichev, state media said.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told CNN that Avdiivka would not have fallen if Kiev had received weapons held back by the failure of the US Congress to pass a major aid package.
Following Ukraine's failure to pierce Russia's front lines in the east and south last year, Moscow has been trying to crack down on Ukrainian forces as Kiev mulls a major new deployment.
