The writer, journalist and biographer Ruy Castro was elected an effective member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) this Thursday (6), becoming one of the 40 immortals of the institution.
Castro occupies Chair 13 of the academy — which belonged to Sergio Paulo Rouanet, who died in July, a victim of advanced Parkinson’s syndrome. Of the 35 academics who participated in the election, 32 voted for Ruy Castro.
The writer began his professional career in 1967 as a reporter for the newspaper Correio da Manhã, in Rio de Janeiro. Until 1990, he worked in several press vehicles in the Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo scene. Afterwards, he concentrated on the books. Among his outstanding works are the biographies of Carmen Miranda and Garrincha. Still this year, he was awarded by ABL with the Machado de Assis award.
Before the new immortal, Francisco de Assis Barbosa, Augusto Meyer, Hélio Lobo, Sousa Bandeira, Martins Júnior, Francisco de Castro, Visconde de Taunay and Francisco Otaviano occupied the same chair.
According to the ABL statute, to become an effective member of the institution it is necessary to have “in any of the genres of literature, published works of recognized merit or, outside these genres, a book of literary value”.
Earlier this year, Ruy Castro spoke to CNN on the 100th anniversary of the 1922 Modern Art Week. Check the interview in full.
