Germany could become independent of Russian gas within the next three years, said RWE, the managing director of the country’s largest electricity producer.
“If we expand quickly, we can do it by the spring of 2025. Supply problems could be somewhat manageable a year earlier,” Markous Krebber told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, according to Reuters.
He also noted that in addition to the construction of infrastructure for the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the construction of new pipelines in all European countries is also required.
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck had previously said that the country could become independent of Russian gas supplies by mid-2024.
RWE’s exposure to goods in Russia includes 15 terawatt hours (TWh) of gas deliveries by 2023, which it has reduced to 4 TWh since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.
Asked about future Russian gas supplies, which are subject to a new holiday payment system, Krebber said: “I expect a further shortage of gas supplies and not a complete shutdown.”
