Ryanair continues its flights to Ukraine

The low-cost Irish airline Ryanair has decided to continue its flights to and from Ukraine, unlike other airlines, its president Michael O’Leary said today in Lisbon.

“Since the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has not deemed it unsafe, there is no reason why we should not continue to secure a connection with Ukraine,” Michael O’Leary told a news conference at a hotel in Lisbon.

“It is important that there is no panic,” he said.

On Saturday, the Dutch company KLM announced the suspension until further notice of all flights in Ukrainian airspace.

For its part, the Ukrainian government on Sunday vowed to keep its airspace open despite Western concerns about the threat of a Russian invasion.

The head of Ryanair took advantage of his visit to Lisbon today to once again call on the Portuguese government to intervene to force the public airline TAP to “release arrival / departure slots” before the end of February. “.

TAP Air Portugal, by far the largest airline based in Portugal, is expected to reduce its operations as part of a restructuring plan negotiated with Brussels and release arrivals and departures at Lisbon airport, with public assistance in return. and led to its renationalisation.

The Portuguese airline, whose financial difficulties were heightened by the Covid-19 pandemic, was urgently rescued by the state in 2020.
