Ryanair hijacking. UK will not fly over Belarus and work with Belavia

British airlines will avoid Belarusian airspace after the forcible landing of a Ryanair plane in Minsk and the arrest of opposition blogger Roman Protasevich. In addition, the country will cease cooperation with Belavia. UK Transport Minister Grant Shapps wrote about this on Twitter.

“After the Ryanair plane was forced to head to Minsk yesterday, I instructed UK_CAA to demand airlines to avoid the airspace of Belarus in order to ensure the safety of passengers. I also suspended the permit for Belavia’s activities,” the minister wrote.

  • On May 23, the regime of Belarusian dictator Lukashenko, using a fighter jet, forced Ryanair flight FR4978 Athens-Vilnius to land in Minsk. The passenger of the plane was Roman Protasevich, co-founder of the opposition Telegram channel NEXTA, who was detained by security officials.
  • The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) said that such an incident “may be contrary to the Chicago Convention.”
  • The parliaments of eight countries called on to suspend flights over Belarus.
