S. Michel: ‘Geopolitical terrorism’ the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is “geopolitical terrorism,” EU Council President Charles Michel said in a speech to the European Parliament today.

Charles Michel said it was not just an attack on Ukraine, but an attack on international law, international law, democracy and human dignity. “Five days ago, Putin launched a massive invasion of Ukraine, an unwarranted war without any provocation, based on horrific lies,” Michel said. “The EU must support Ukraine and protect peace and democracy,” he said.

“More and more countries are committing to an anti-war alliance. Together with peoples around the world they are sending a common message: Russia, stop the war. Go home. Let ‘s talk,” said the EU Council President.

Regarding Ukraine’s “legitimate” request for EU membership, Charles Michel said that the Council (member states) should seriously consider it. He noted, however, that there are differing views in the EU on this issue.

He also referred to the European sanctions against Russia, but also to the solidarity that the EU expresses in practice with Ukraine, with humanitarian aid, but also with military means that will be given by the member states.
