Sabotage of the two Nord Stream pipelines: Not from our own energy, says Ukraine

Ukraine was not involved in the sabotage of the two Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic last September, Ukraine’s defense minister said today following press reports implicating “a pro-Ukrainian group” in energy.
“It does not come from our own energy,” said Oleksii Reznikov in response to a related question on the sidelines of a European meeting in Stockholm.

Citing information from US intelligence, the New York Times yesterday attributed the sabotage to “a pro-Ukrainian group”, but without the involvement of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

“I recommend not to jump to conclusions,” German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said at the start of the Stockholm meeting.

An adviser to the president of Ukraine has since last night denied Kiev’s involvement, referring to “fun conspiracy theories”.

On September 26, 2022, massive leaks from four points following underwater explosions occurred in the pipelines connecting Russia to Germany in international waters.

Despite investigations by coastal countries (Germany, Sweden and Denmark), responsibility for the attack remains unknown, according to AFP and Athens News Agency.

Evidence gathered by US intelligence services leads to the conclusion that the perpetrators of the sabotage are “opponents of Russian President Vladimir Putin,” the New York Times reported.

Out of service today, the two pipelines contained significant amounts of methane.

A symbol of Europe’s, and especially Germany’s, energy dependence on Russia, the two pipelines, which had gathered Washington’s attention, were at the center of geopolitical tensions after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Washington and Moscow blamed each other for the sabotage.

The Kremlin rejected today information that a “pro-Ukrainian group” was responsible for the sabotage, claiming that this is an attempt to “distract”.

“It is clear that perpetrators of the attack seek to distract attention. It is clear that this is a coordinated communication action,” said Dmitry Peskov, Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, according to the Ria Novosti agency.

“This case is not only strange. It looks like a monstrous crime,” he said, calling for an “urgent transparent investigation.”

Peskov repeated the Kremlin’s request that Russia join the investigation
