‘Safari’ of EETT in telecommunication companies

By Fotis Fotinos

The National Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) continues to control audits of telecommunications companies at a steady pace. Over the past 15 months, the Independent Authority has conducted 36 inspections and autopsies on network infrastructure and 400 on-site inspections at landline / mobile and internet service providers’ stores.

The aim was to control the implementation of the procedures related to the development and operation of new generation networks, in order to ensure the uninterrupted provision of new generation services and local loop services.

Respectively, the stores checked the compliance of the providers with the obligations to the subscribers, which derive from the “General License Regulations” and number portability.

The number of complaints is decreasing

The complaints received by EETT for the telecommunication companies amounted, in 2021, to almost 9,000, compared to 12,000 in 2020 and 14,600 in 2019.

This means that, in the last three years, there has been an annual decrease of almost 22% in the number of complaints, which is a positive development.

Regarding the “thorny” phenomenon of the practices of unilateral extension / renewal of the validity of contracts, EETT has been conducting, since December 2021, audits of the 3-4 largest companies in the sector, in order to combat any delinquent behavior.

In fact, in the telecommunications market it is rumored that EETT’s controls have activated in the providers internal mechanisms for reviewing certain procedures.

In total, in 2021 EETT imposed fines of 650,000 euros and in 2020 fines of 263,000 euros.

During these two years, it was not possible to hold hearings in the physical presence of the interested parties, due to the pandemic.
