Sage tea is a natural ally that is increasingly sought after by those looking for alternatives to improve their health and well-being. Known scientifically as Salvia officinalis, the herb is rich in bioactive compounds that bring benefits such as relief from sore throats and digestive discomfort. But that’s not all!
One of the most striking features of sage is its ability to improve cognitive function. Studies indicate that the compounds present in the plant can stimulate memory, concentration and even protect the brain against neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s.
The herb also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help treat various conditions, such as sore throats, gum inflammation and rheumatic problems.
“Sage is an herb with numerous health benefits, used to relieve pain, especially sore throat and symptoms of indigestion, improve cognitive functions due to its anti-inflammatory power, and to control diabetes, due to its hypoglycemic action. Among the compounds that act in these activities we find phenolic compounds such as coumarin, flavonoids and tannins and rosmarinic acid”, explains Bianca De Luca, nutritionist.
In addition, sage can also help heal mouth wounds and prevent bad breath.
How to prepare sage tea
Preparing sage tea is very simple and quick. Just follow the step by step below to obtain a healthy and tasty infusion:
- Boil a cup of water
- Place 5 to 10 fresh sage leaves (or a teaspoon of dried leaves) in a cup and pour boiling water over the top.
- Cover the cup and let it infuse for approximately 10 minutes. This time allows the active compounds to be released into the water.
- Strain the tea before drinking and, if desired, add honey to soften the flavor.
It is important to highlight that, although tea offers several benefits, excessive consumption is not recommended.
“The maximum consumption should be 400ml per day, alternating with other teas. It should not be consumed without guidance by people who are allergic to sage, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with epilepsy, kidney failure or those undergoing treatment for hormone-dependent cancers”, adds Fernanda Larralde, nutritionist.
