Sales in malls across Brazil recorded a 24% increase in May, compared to the same period in 2021, and surpassed the pre-pandemic period, according to data from the Cielo Retail Index in Shopping Centers (ICVS-Abrasce) .
This is the 14th consecutive monthly growth, “a movement that reinforces the moment of recovery in the sector, which started last year”, informed the Association, in a note.
From a regional point of view, the locations that stood out in terms of sales in May were: Southeast (26.6%) and Northeast (25.6%). In the Midwest region, the increase was 23.3%, in the South it was 17.2% and in the North it was 11.7%.
And, even with a macroeconomic scenario characterized by high inflation and a drop in the income of Brazilian families, the average sales ticket in mall stores was R$ 125.45 in May.
The amount is 17.9% lower than in the same month of 2021, but it is 35% higher than the BRL 92.92 recorded in May 2019.
In the first five months of the year alone, the shopping malls’ trade accumulates an increase of 39.7% compared to the same period in 2021. And the number of visitors grew 39.9% in May, compared to the same month of the previous year. .
“The rise in shopping malls coincides with a clear recovery in the flow of visitors to the sector, reflecting a growing number of Brazilians immunized against the coronavirus”, declared the Association.
Data indicate that, in May, there was a 39.9% growth in total visitors compared to the same period in 2021.
Abrasce’s president, Glauco Humai, says that “the data corroborate the theses that the increase in sales in malls will be gradual and continuous in 2022. The increases occur as the level of visitors grows, as the sector offers visitors a safe environment, in every way”.
