After registering a loss of 1.4% in 2020, sales of the automobile and parts and construction material sector ended 2021 with an accumulated growth of 4.5%.
The data were collected by CNN, based on the Monthly Trade Survey (PMC), released last Wednesday (9) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The survey also pointed out that, from November to December 2021, the volume of retail sales in these segments recorded a positive change of 0.3%.
According to economist at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), Ulysses Reis, in 2020, factories were unable to produce because of the pandemic and lack of raw materials, which led to a shortage of these products in the market.
But, according to him, in 2021, the industries of these segments were gradually resuming production and the used vehicle market also had an increase in demand, even with high prices.
Reis explained that it takes 12,000 suppliers, on average, to assemble a car. But as not all automakers have enough inputs, parts, especially chips and semiconductors, have become rarer.
“Without these parts, the car won’t work. In the past, the automobile was not so technological, but today it is. So, it is no longer possible to manufacture a vehicle without these characteristics. But, the trend is for this market to reheat and get better and better this year,” he notes.
In addition to vehicles, the economist drew attention to construction materials, which also recorded a positive balance last year. According to him, isolation was a factor that helped boost this sector.
“As people stayed at home longer, they began to invest in their own homes. Little by little, the renovation started to grow and so did the purchase of products,” he says.
Retail sales, in general, closed the year 2021 with an accumulated growth of 1.4%, compared to 2020. According to the IBGE, last year was the fifth consecutive year of positive results for the volume of sales in the retail.
The result was close to the two previous years, which registered an increase of 1.2% (2020) and 1.8% (2019). The last year to accumulate losses compared to the previous year was 2016 (-6.2%).
