2021 has become a landmark year for the foldable smartphone segment. Sales of this category of devices have increased several times over the 12 months of last year, as evidenced by a new report from the research company Omdia.
According to Omdia analysts, in 2021, the cumulative sales of foldable smartphones amounted to about 9 million units. This is 309% more than in 2020. Interestingly, 8 out of 9 million foldable devices, or 89% of the total, were sold in the second half of 2021. If we count from the moment the first folding smartphone was released in 2019, such devices have sold about 11.5 million units in two years.
The South Korean company Samsung remains the leading manufacturer of folding devices. Its Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 clamshell, released last year, became the best-selling foldable smartphone on the market. Its sales last year amounted to 4.6 million units. In second place in popularity with sales of 2.5 million copies is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
The second largest manufacturer of foldable devices, Omdia analysts named the Chinese company Huawei, which shipped 900,000 smartphones with a flexible design last year. But sales of the MIX Fold smartphone launched by the Chinese company Xiaomi last year did not live up to expectations. However, Xiaomi does not despair and this year is going to release the second generation of its foldable smartphone.
Omdia analysts say foldable devices have huge growth potential. They expect their annual sales to grow to 61 million units by 2026. This will be approximately 3.6% of the total global smartphone market.
