According to a study by IDC, the Western European market for printers and multifunctional devices (MFPs) in the last quarter increased by 5.0% compared to the same period in 2019. In total, 5.35 million printers and MFPs were sold during the quarter. At the same time, in monetary terms, the market decreased by 8.7%, to 2.1 billion euros. This was the second quarter in a row that sales were growing in terms of quantity, but declining in terms of money. The decrease was due to a decrease in sales of more expensive A3 models.
For the whole of 2020, 0.6% more printers and MFPs were sold compared to 2019, but in monetary terms, the market shrank.
Analysts attribute the sales growth to increased demand for inexpensive color inkjet and monochrome laser models in the consumer segment. A significant portion of the sales came from e-retail, but in many cases these printers and MFPs were purchased by businesses for employees who switched to telecommuting.
