The US government’s decision, as announced by Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken, to declare the former president an undesirable person in the US is causing strong unrest in the Albanian political scene. Sally Berisha.
Mr Blinken has called for Berisha and his family to be barred from entering the United States, citing allegations of corruption, interference in public affairs, misuse of public money and obstruction of democracy in the country.
Berisha himself dismissed the allegations in high tones, demanding that the State Department prove them publicly. He even said that he was “the ardent Albanian pro-American politician who carried out everything that the US governments asked him to do” and added that he was the one who revealed the plans to change the borders in Kosovo, which, as he claimed, the billionaire was preparing in Belgrade.
On the same wavelength is the successor in the Democratic Party founded by Berisha, Lioulezim Basia, who, however, is considered in his country to be a political subordinate of his predecessor.
The issue was transferred to the Albanian Parliament today, where the Minister in front of the Prime Minister, responsible for the government’s relations with the Parliament, Elisa Spyropali, claimed that the frontal struggle to end the impunity of politicians has no setback and accused the “xo” as Berisha described him, that he cultivated catastrophic phenomena in the country, adding that “Albania has no obligation to him”.
An emblematic political figure, Sali Berisha has dominated the Albanian political scene for the last thirty years, during which he was twice elected President of the Republic and two other Prime Ministers, while he was the leader of the opposition until his resignation in 2013.
As expected, the issue caused a stir and reactions in the Albanian public opinion as well. Dozens of headlines, reports, analyzes and comments provide information and information about the decision of the American authorities and others raise questions about the timing of the publication of such an issue.
Recently, the US Ambassador to Tirana, Yuri Kim, has been particularly active in clearing public life of people involved in corruption and links to organized crime.
