Salman Rushdie: Great relief for his family that he no longer needs mechanical breathing support

Salman Rushdie’s family said today they were “hugely relieved” that the British author no longer needed mechanical breathing support and assured that his sense of humor remained “intact” despite the severity of his injuries.

“My father remains in critical condition in hospital and is receiving intensive and ongoing treatment,” his son, Zafar Rushdi, said in a Twitter message posted on behalf of the family.

“We are extremely relieved that yesterday (Saturday) he was taken off the ventilator and oxygen supply and that he was able to say a few words,” he added.

“Although his injuries are serious and potentially life-changing, his usual lively and defiant sense of humor remains intact,” continued Zafar Rushdi, who runs a London-based public relations office.

Rushdie’s son thanked the people who came to the “Satanic Verses” author’s defense during Friday’s attack in New York State, as well as the police and medical staff who helped him.
