Rage and uproar has been caused by a popular TV presenter on Ivory Coast, who invited a “former rapist” to show a doll how he attacked women.
The presenter was sentenced to a 12-month suspended sentence, accused of promoting the rape live.
Yves de M’Bella caused outrage and walked away from the channel and the radio station where he worked.
The Minister for Women’s Affairs Nassénéba Touré stated that broadcast on Monday undermined efforts to eliminate rape incidents.
The court fined the presenter $ 3,600 and barred him from going outside the city of Abidjan, according to Reuters.
His guest presenter, Kader Traoré, was sentenced to two years in prison and fined $ 900 also for promoting rape.
In court, however, he said he had a previous conviction for theft and not rape.
The show’s attempt was to condemn the sexual assaults, according to AFP. Nevertheless M’Bella appeared to laugh and joke as he helped Traoré throw the doll to the floor. Subsequently the guest was asked to give advice to the women on how to avoid rape.
An online application demanding the presenter’s punishment garnered nearly 50,000 signatures in a short period of time.
Bénédicte Joan Ouamba, who is involved in campaigns against gender-based violence, said that as a rape victim, “it was very difficult to watch this scene”.
Some believe that the presenter should be punished more severely, with imprisonment for example. On Wednesday, a protest took place outside the offices of the television station.
On Tuesday, M’Bella, who is from Cameroon, apologized, admitting that he had made a mistake in trying to raise awareness about the rape.
