Salvador Dali: The only wax sculpture that was considered lost for four decades was found in the possession of a collector

A unique wax sculpture created by Salvador Dali which was considered lost for four decades was discovered and exhibited to the public for the first time by a gallery in Hawaii on the occasion of the 118th anniversary of the birth of the Catalan artist.

The masterpiece was found safe and sound and in the hands of a private collector who wished to remain anonymous. It is estimated to be worth up to $ 20 million.

The work was completed in 1979, a decade before Daly’s death, and depicts Christ crucified above water. It is based on the artist’s painting from 1951, with the same theme. Both the statue and the painting are called “The Christ of St. John on the Cross “.

“Harte International Gallery has sold many copies of the work but no one believed that the original, made by Mr. Daly himself, would ever be found,” said one of the gallery’s owners.

As it turned out, the man in possession of it, a close friend of Daly, had carefully guarded it and stored it in the plexiglass case, which had been designed by the artist himself.

The gallery was in contact with the collector, who wished to remain anonymous in order to buy a book from him. When they found out about the statue, they bought it, gave it the title “Lost Candle” and now they are exhibiting it for the first time after the death of the artist.

The project is valued at between $ 10 million and $ 20 million, although it is not for sale. An expert in Daly art, he confirmed that this is an original work of the artist.
