Salvamare: a law finally allows us to eliminate plastic from the sea

Until now, fishermen were forced to throw the plastic they caught back into the sea. Otherwise they would have risked a complaint for illegal transport of waste. From now on, this will no longer be the case for seas, lakes and rivers thanks to the law Save approved by the Senate with 198 votes in favor, no against and 17 abstentions.

It was the then Minister of the Environment Sergio Costa who presented the bill with the provisions for the recovery of waste at sea and in inland waters and for the promotion of the circular economy. The law allows plastic recovered at sea to be brought to port and sent for recycling.

“Perseverance, stubbornness, desire, passion, with a pinch of parliamentary madness, have transformed an idea into a law that is good for the sea and for Italy,” commented the former minister Costa on Facebook. “From now Environmental Education forcefully enters all Italian schools. Previously it was possible, but not mandatory. From now on, yes. “

The associations for the protection of the environment, but also those of the category of ships and fishing, are all in favor of the provision that has had almost 100,000 signatories for the Marevivo petition on Change.org. “THEOur country will have an effective and concrete tool, also required by the European Union, which will allow fishermen to bring the plastic recovered with nets ashore instead of unloading it into the sea, an action that previously constituted the crime of illegal waste transport. The law also provides for the installation of collection systems at the mouth of rivers to intercept the plastic before it reaches the sea and also deals with desalinators, education, cleaning campaigns, oceanic posidonia and much more ».
