Salvatore Esposito and Marco D’Amore: “In the Gomorrah finale the intimate gaze on Genny and Ciro”

The final showdown is upon us. Ciro Di Marzio (Marco D’Amore) and Gennaro Savastano (Salvatore Esposito) find themselves facing each other again for the fifth and final season of Gomorrah (from 19 November on Sky and streaming on Now), the series inspired by the novel of the same name by Roberto Saviano and among the most popular Italian products in the world (the New York Times placed it in fifth place among the most important non-American productions of the decade 2010/2020).

Genny is in his bunker in Naples, he has renounced the affections of the family to get back to Secondigliano and clean up the Levante with the help of ‘O Maestrale, the violent boss of Ponticelli. However, there is an unexpected obstacle: Ciro. His former right-hand man is still alive, to confess it to him is Don Aniello, the one who saved him that fateful night, told in the third season. Ciro and Genny meet again in Riga, they embrace, but a war begins again between the two to regain the throne of Naples.

Gomorrah 5 and the intimacy between Genny and Ciro

«I hope that the viewer doesn’t feel anxious about how it will turn out Gomorrah, but let yourself be intrigued by the path », Marco D’Amore tells us. “We shifted our gaze: from the story of a world to the intimacy of two people which become a magnet for those around them, which determine unexpected reactions, fractures and new unions ». “To tell this final series we have to go back to the first season”, adds his friend Salvatore who says goodbye to Genny.

The difficult goodbye to Gomorrah

«The end is never pleasant because it brings to mind the memories, everything you have lived in these years and how much you have grown, but at the same time there is the awareness of living in peace for what you have done, now I feel lighter. Marco and I are now in a limbo between melancholy and the desire to start a new path».

«Gomorrah it was a life experience, how can it be to one deep friendship or love “confesses D’Amore, it is clear that I feel melancholy and sadness, but when you feel you have given all of yourself, without regrets, you can live in peace ».

Genny and Ciro in comparison

Genny and Ciro are two characters who have left their mark on the world of television series. “Ciro it took off a lot of dust, it was the residue of my prejudices with respect to certain life experiences and certain places I had escaped from when I was very young », Marco tells us. “He brought me back to the territory I left and it made me understand that even behind the most atrocious and wrong choices there are stories, there are lost rights and places, where it is impossible to live, but where humanity is still preserved and where there is the resistance of a community that shouts to the world that it wants to be well ».

“In recent years I have reflected on judgment, how much we are used to judging anything even without knowing it”, Salvatore reflects. “If each of us started judging less it would be a better world. We often know the results of a choice, but we don’t know what’s behind it. Often we start from the cliché that everyone has the possibility of choice: in some places and family contexts this is not the case “.

The final farewell a Gomorrah

“Yes, it’s a definitive farewell”, Marco D’Amore tells us without ifs and buts, “we felt it was consistent to end this adventure now. Let’s act like the great players who hang up their shoes at the right time to leave a wonderful memory, otherwise we would risk taking the field and making a bad impression ».
