Lega secretary not to be tried in Gregoretti’s immigrant case Mateo Salvini ruled on Friday (14/5) the judge in charge of the preliminary hearings, Nuncio Sabietro.
According to the Athenian News Agency, Sabietro announced that there is no incriminating evidence against Salvini, who two years ago was Minister of Interior in the Lega government alliance with the Five Stars and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
In July 2019, more than 130 migrants and refugees were forced to stay for six days on the Italian Coast Guard ship Gregoretti. Salvini, as interior minister, first wanted assurances from EU member states that their redistribution process would proceed at a very fast pace.
It is recalled that three weeks ago, the prosecutor in charge of the preliminary investigations in Palermo, with a diametrically opposite decision, ordered the referral to a trial of Salvini for a similar case: this case concerns the intervention of Salvini with the aim of delaying the landing7 immigrants and refugees who were rescued by the Spanish NGO Open Arms in August 2019.
