Sam Bankman-Fried’s attorney, Mark Cohen, said the prison’s lack of vegan options has forced the former FTX executive to subsist on bread, peanut butter and water. He explained this by the fact that the menu of the Brooklyn detention center – Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) – consists of meat, dairy products and fast food. In addition, Bankman-Fried has not received medication for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for 11 days.
“This is one of the toughest cases in this courthouse. My client, like many people in the world, follows a vegan diet. The conditions of his detention are outrageous and need to be fixed,” Cowen tweeted.
Bankman-Fried’s legal team says this has a big impact on their ability to prepare for upcoming lawsuits. A court hearing is scheduled for October 2 this year. However, there has been no progress in the case since Bankman-Freed returned to prison for violating house arrest conditions, lawyers say.
On August 21, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered that Bankman-Freed contact his lawyers on August 22 during a one-time meeting. He was allowed to use a laptop with Wi-Fi Internet access. At the latest hearing, Bankman-Fried’s lawyers said that their client would be able to visit the New York courthouse twice a week. However, Bankman-Fried would only be given access to a pencil and paper, and would have to communicate with them by pressing his notes against a glass partition.
The founder of FTX acknowledged problems in risk management on the exchange, but denied the theft of user funds. Earlier, the court rejected a motion to dismiss most of the charges against Sam Bankman-Freed, calling the defense arguments unfounded.
