McAfee’s ex-girlfriend claims that the creator of the McAfee antivirus and a well-known crypto enthusiast did not die in his prison cell, but faked his death and fled to the United States.
John McAffe is believed to have hanged himself in a Spanish prison in June 2021 while awaiting extradition to the United States on charges of tax evasion. However, according to his ex-girlfriend from Belize Samantha Herrera (Samantha Herrera), he managed to fake his own death, and then moved to Texas.
In the new Netflix documentary Run with the Devil: John McAfee’s Wild World, Samantha Herrera states:
“Two weeks after his death, he called me from Texas and said that he paid people who acknowledged his death. McAfee asked me to run away with him, said only three people in this world knew he was still alive.”
The director of the documentary, Charlie Russell, expressed bewilderment at the girl’s statement:
“I can’t understand if she thinks this is true or not. Samantha is one of those who was very angry with John. He promised her a beautiful life and I think they were genuinely in love despite the huge age difference. But then John literally abandoned her at the border. It was very painful, it took the girl years to overcome what happened.
McAfee was arrested in Spain in October 2020 at the request of the US Department of Justice. The Spanish National Court authorized the extradition on June 23, 2021. McAfee was found dead in his jail cell hours after the news broke. An official autopsy showed that McAfee had committed suicide, which was confirmed by a Spanish court. So far, there is no credible confirmation of Samantha Herrera’s claim, and McAfee’s remains are reportedly currently being held in a Spanish mortuary.
McAfee became famous in the crypto community after he made a bet in 2017 that Bitcoin would rise to $500,000 by 2020. Then he raised the rate until it reached $1 million. McAfee promoted crypto projects on social networks for about $105,000 per post.
