Samba schools and authorities revere Monarco’s legacy

The body of master Monarco, president of honor and stronghold of Portela, will be watched from 11 am, in the court of the association, in Madureira. The information has been confirmed to CNN by the president of the association, Luiz Carlos Magalhães. The burial will take place in the cemetery of Inhaúma, at an undefined time.

The death of Madureira and Oswaldo Cruz’s blue and white bastion touched the samba world and the political authorities. All the associations of the Special Group of the carioca carnival manifested themselves on social networks, recognizing the importance of the samba musician for Brazilian culture, and with messages of solidarity to people from Porto, fans and families.

The second biggest winner of the carioca carnival, with 18 titles, behind only Portela, which totals 18, Mangueira also lost this year its honorary president and one of its main strongholds: Nelson Sargento, who died in May, aged 96, victim of Covid-19. The green and pink published:

“Estação Primeira de Mangueira deeply regrets the departure of yet another bastion of samba. Monarch will be missed and an irreparable gap. Our deepest feelings to your family, friends and co-sister Portela”, he published.

Current champion of the party, with the 2020 title, Viradouro, from Niterói, also positioned itself. “To the immense nation of Porto, all the solidarity of the directors and components of Unidos do Viradouro. May God light up Monarco’s path in the new journey and comfort the master’s family, who will never be forgotten by the immense legion of fans”, he highlighted.

There were manifestations of historical associations from the Ouro Series, equivalent to the second division of the revelry. Portelense, Mayor Eduardo Paes also manifested. He posted photos next to the samba dancer, who died at the age of 88.

“My dear friend and godfather is gone. How sad. Thank you for giving me so many special moments. We will forever honor your poetry and love for samba and Portela. You’ll be sorely missed”, posted the mayor on his social media accounts.

In another message, Paes posted a video of the artist singing his campaign jingle in the 2012 municipal election, when he was re-elected. “And when your biggest idol makes a song for you… Viva Monarco! I miss them a lot”, he concluded.

Governor Cláudio Castro also spoke on a social network. “Samba loses one of its greatest expressions. I deeply regret the passing of Mestre Monarco and express my deepest feelings to the Porto family and to the world of samba, to which he dedicated his 88 years of life”, he said.
