In the field of foldable smartphones with flexible screens, a new breakthrough has emerged. Chinese display manufacturer BOE showed off a prototype device with a screen that can be folded in two directions instead of one.

The fact is that at the moment, manufacturers of foldable smartphones are forced to choose between two solutions – “screen in” and “screen out”. Initially, Huawei released the Mate X and Mate Xs in a screen-out design, and with the release of the Mate X2, it switched to the variant used in the rival Samsung Galaxy Fold line-up.
BOE’s new development will enable smartphones that can be folded both “screen in” and “screen out”. As a result, if necessary, the case protects the screen hidden inside, and on the other – there is no need for an external display in case the user does not need a large format in a tablet style.
BOE has now mass-produced screens with a bend radius of 5 to 3 mm and can handle up to 200,000 folds.
