Samsung introduced the Galaxy Gear Android smartwatch in 2013. The company later switched to its own operating system, and now Samsung is advising Galaxy Gear owners to switch to Tizen by August 5 to continue to have access to the Galaxy Store.
Samsung will switch to Wear OS for its smartwatches later this year. The new version of Wear OS based on Android will form the basis of the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Active instead of Tizen. New smartwatches from a Wear OS device will have more access to apps through the Galaxy Store, unlike Tizen. Samsung has also confirmed that the watch currently powered by Tizen will not be migrating to Wear OS.
Owners of the original Samsung Galaxy Gear may not be that many, but the fact that Samsung has made an official announcement for them indicates that there are still enough of them to reckon with.
Existing Galaxy Gear owners can only continue to benefit from Samsung support if they upgrade to Tizen by August 5th. To avoid completely losing your saved data, Galaxy Gear watch owners are advised to back up their data. After the update is complete, all data on the watch will be deleted.
The updated Samsung Galaxy Watch will have access to a limited number of apps compared to the new Wear OS smartwatch.
