Samsung comments on Intel’s decision to rely more on contract manufacturing of chips

Samsung Electronics commented for the first time on Intel’s decision to increase its order for outsourced chip production. At the same time, the South Korean giant refused to talk about any possible partnership with one of its main competitors.

Intel is one of the few chip makers with in-house manufacturing. The company said last week that it intends to rely more on third-party vendors and may even license technology from them.

In fact, only Samsung, the world’s largest memory chip manufacturer, and TSMC, the world’s largest contract manufacturer of semiconductor products, are competitors to Intel in terms of advanced manufacturing processes.

“We really think Intel’s outsourcing decision – in terms of the entire contract manufacturing market – will increase the latter,” said Shawn Han, Samsung’s senior vice president in charge of contract manufacturing.

However, he declined to comment on any possible partnership with Intel or quantify the impact of Intel’s decision.

Intel has already partnered with TSMC in the automotive chip industry. According to unofficial information, the Taiwanese manufacturer will receive other orders – in particular, for the release of Intel graphics processors for personal computers.
