Samsung ditches key Android 12 feature in its firmware

In the first half of September, Samsung began open beta testing in the United States of its new One UI 4.0 firmware, based on Android 12. Now, screenshots of it began to appear in the media, indicating that the key innovation of the new “green robot” in the face of the adaptable Material You theme will not appear on Samsung smartphones. It is possible that this option will remain exclusive to Google Pixel devices.

This is how the updated “Calculator” looks like, painted in the color of the system theme (desktop wallpaper)

The Material You feature in Android 12 adapts the theme of the system interface to the color of the wallpaper on the home screen, and applications that support this function are also adjusted to it. Many reviewers (and Google itself) call this option one of the key innovations in the new “green robot”, but it will most likely remain exclusive to the Pixel. At least Samsung’s One UI 4.0 beta doesn’t have it.

As noted by Ben Schoon of 9To5Google, One UI 4.0 looks little different from the previous version. However, several notable innovations from Android 12 have appeared. For example, in the shell now the indicators of the switched on microphone and the working camera are displayed; the brightness slider and similar elements have become thicker; the widget selection menu has changed; the “Privacy Panel” appeared, slightly different from the implementation from Google.

During the I / O event, which announced Android 12, developers at Google announced that Material You will first appear on Pixel devices, and only then elsewhere. So there is a possibility that in the future Samsung will add support for the responsive theme from Android 12 to its firmware. This may also be reminiscent of One UI 4.0’s codename Palette, which clearly implies some interaction with color.
