Samsung Galaxy S21 +: Virtue lies in the middle

Over the years, the design of Samsung smartphones has evolved a lot, but the brand has managed to maintain a recognizable style. The Galaxy S21 + maintains the brand’s DNA, it abandons the curved edges like the previous models but introduces some changes and its appearance gives us that sense of novelty that we expect in a newly launched device.

L‘S21 Plus we are using is the middle family model, consisting of S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra. It is the only member to have changed the battery in favor of a larger one, and is suitable for those who love the large diagonals of the display and do not need the extreme features of the S21 Ultra.

The large display (6.7 ”, compared to the S21’s 6.2 ”) has narrow edges and screen Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED 2X with central camera inserted in a small hole.

The innovations in terms of design are concentrated in the rear, where manufacturers have more leeway to introduce new solutions. Samsung with this device abandons the glossy back and gives way to a matte finish that feels clearly to the touch. The color of our unit is the new Phantom Violet – a delicate wisteria color with golden reflections – which resists fingerprints very well. The elegant look is further enhanced by the gold finishes.

Also at the rear, in the upper left corner, is the feature that makes the new top-of-the-range smartphones of the Korean company truly unmistakable: the photographic sector. The three cameras are framed by a contrasting and embossed module (which can recall the cuff of a man’s shirt with its buttons) that blends seamlessly with the metal frame. It is certainly an innovative solution that just cannot go unnoticed. And this, which is certainly a merit, can however alienate those who appreciate a more traditional design.

Look aside, the photographic quality is at the level of a real top of the range: sharp shots, even in low light conditions. But the news that, rightly, is causing the most talk is the function «Freeze Picture 8K “which allows you to get a 33MP high quality photo gallery from each 8K video. So you can focus on recording the video and shoot later. Furthermore, the “Super Stabilizer » guarantees smooth video at 60fps regardless of speed or shooting conditions. For those who use the smartphone as an action camera.

Like other family members, the Plus comes with 5G connectivity, which can be fully enjoyed (where coverage is already available) thanks to the marriage with most advanced processor ever built into a Galaxy device.

The other feature that make this middle model the most interesting option, especially for those who don’t mess around when it comes to scrambling a device with hours of gaming or TV series, is the battery which, in the Plus, is more capacious. And its duration (which reaches 48 hours with average use) is further preserved thanks to the “smart” screen, capable of automatically changing the refresh rate based on the content displayed, thus limiting battery consumption. Another novelty designed for smartphone diehards is the new eye protection system that adapts blue light according to the time and content displayed, to reduce eye fatigue.

In short, the S21 Plus seems to confirm the Latin saying in medio stat virtus.
