Samsung hired a processor expert who worked at Apple and Qualcomm

Despite the loud claims about the flagship Exynos 2200 chipset with AMD GPU, the Galaxy 22 smartphones, frankly, did not impress much. The main criticism came at limiting the performance of the devices to prevent overheating. Now Samsung is rethinking its chip development strategy and is working hard to create a competitive processor. According to Business Korea, the company has hired a former Apple employee who worked for years on the hardware platform team.

Earlier it was reported that Samsung has created a powerful Dream Platform One team of 1,000 people to develop a chipset exclusively for its own Galaxy smartphones. The company’s previous strategy was for the South Korean giant to develop chips for itself and other Android device makers such as Google and Xiaomi. But because of this approach, within the company, apparently, there was a “design for sale” attitude. Now Samsung has decided to follow the path of Apple, that is, to create an Exynos processor exclusively for Galaxy smartphones. It may be introduced in 2025.

Business Korea claims that Samsung has appointed former Apple employee Kim Woo as director of the newly established Packaging Solution Center at Device Solution America (DSA). Kim is originally from South Korea and has worked at Texas Instruments and Qualcomm before moving to Apple in 2014. The publication provides few details about what Kim will be doing at Samsung, and does not say what exactly he worked on at Apple. Only the technology that is used by manufacturers to solve SoC integration problems is mentioned.

It is worth noting that Cupertino has several divisions that develop processors for the iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch, as well as U1 chips that provide ultra-wideband technology. Samsung recently started manufacturing chips using a 3nm process that is expected to provide 23% performance and 45% energy efficiency improvements over 5nm.
