Samsung introduces electric vehicle technology to increase smartphone battery capacity

The South Korean manufacturer has never been known for battery innovation, including charging technology. Samsung is far behind other Android device manufacturers in the race for fast charging. For example, Xiaomi and OPPO have already broken the 200W barrier, while Samsung has yet to hit the 50W mark. The company is clearly not interested in this race, but is exploring a new technology that will allow you to equip your smartphones with larger batteries.

According to TheElec, Samsung plans to mass-produce multilayer smartphone batteries to achieve higher capacity in the same size. Multi-layer batteries are widely used in electric vehicles, and Samsung SDI is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of such components.

It is estimated that the use of this technology in smartphones can lead to a capacity increase of 10% or more. Consequently, the battery life of the mobile device will also increase. This means that a smartphone that currently has a 5,000 mAh battery will get a 5,500 mAh or higher battery through the use of a layered design. In addition, it should also increase battery life and reduce battery production costs.

Samsung SDI has already prepared a pilot assembly line for the production of multi-layer batteries at its plant in Tianjin (China). Now they are being tested there, after which the experience will be transferred to the production lines of the Korean plant in Cheonan. At the initial stage, the company plans to invest tens of billions of won, and at least 100 billion won (6.4 billion rubles) will be required to upgrade all production lines. The prospects for multi-layer batteries are promising, but don’t expect them to appear in smartphones anytime soon.
