Samsung is developing the Hexa2pixel sensor. Fans think it’s for a 450MP camera

Not so long ago, Samsung introduced two 200-megapixel ISOCELL image sensors. None of them has yet been used by the South Korean manufacturer in its own Galaxy smartphones, but other companies, including Motorola and Xiaomi, have already rushed to announce the release of their devices with this sensor. The most interesting thing is that Samsung is working on another sensor, the resolution of which can be 450 megapixels (!).

Samsung has filed for the trademark “Hexa2pixel” in South Korea, and the same will appear in Europe. The trademark description doesn’t say it’s an image sensor, much less mention a 450MP resolution. Nevertheless, fans of the South Korean giant are already putting forward various theories, one of which is that Hexa2pixel stands for ultra-high resolution.

They explain it as follows. The existing ISOCELL HP1 sensor has a resolution of 200MP, but it can switch to 50MP mode thanks to a 4×4 hybrid binning technology called Tetra2pixel. Accordingly, Hexa2pixel is a new technology that works in a similar way, but combines more pixels into one – 6×6. From here comes the resolution of the image sensor at 450 megapixels.

Obviously, this is just a guess. Even if such a technology is indeed being developed by Samsung, the company is unlikely to introduce a 450MP sensor anytime soon.
