Samsung lost to Chinese brands in the fight for the smartphone market in India

Analyst firm IDC has released a fresh report on the Indian smartphone market. It is interesting in that there have been certain changes among the largest players. In particular, Samsung lost its positions and dropped to the fourth place of the largest suppliers of smartphones in this country. And the point here is not so much in the South Korean manufacturer, but in the Realme and Vivo companies, which managed to increase their shares. Xiaomi is still in the lead.

Xiaomi holds the largest share of the Indian smartphone market (20.4%), although the Chinese industrial giant sold 2.7 million fewer smartphones in India this quarter than a year earlier. On an annualized basis, the company lost 8.8%. Samsung, which confidently secured second place, dropped to fourth place. Deliveries of smartphones of the South Korean company in the second quarter of 2022 amounted to 5.7 million (16.3%) – 200 thousand more than a year earlier. Nevertheless, this did not help her to keep the position – she was bypassed by Realme and Vivo with shares of 17.5% and 16.9%, respectively.

Looking only at flagship smartphones $500 and up, Apple leads the pack (53%), followed by OnePlus (19%) and Samsung (15%). By the way, the segment of such smartphones occupies only 6% in the Indian market, which indicates the highest demand for budget and mid-range devices. The average cost of a smartphone in India is currently $213.
