Samsung now prioritizes LCD screens for its smartphones to keep costs down

Many people associate Samsung smartphones with Super AMOLED screens. Indeed, the company equips even some of its budget models with such panels. However, as it turned out, at the end of 2021, the statistics of the Korean giant speak in favor of not AMOLED at all.

Samsung now prioritizes LCD screens for its smartphones to keep costs down

According to the latest report from Omdia, shipments of Samsung LCD smartphones last year exceeded shipments of AMOLED smartphones. More specifically, last year the company sold 135.1 million smartphones with AMOLED screens and 135.8 million smartphones with LCD displays. Yes, the difference is negligible, but still it is in favor of models with IPS panels.

If we compare these figures with 2020, it turns out that shipments of smartphones with AMOLED panels decreased by 15%, while shipments of smartphones with LCD screens increased by 41%.

The source suggests that the shift in emphasis towards IPS panels from Samsung was due to the desire to compensate for the shortage of components and, as a result, the rise in the cost of components. Samsung is expected to continue its cost-cutting policy this year, which means more low-end models could be transitioning from AMOLED to IPS panels.
