Samsung opens chip research center and plans to invest $15 billion by 2028

Samsung announced on Friday that it has opened a new semiconductor research and development complex in South Korea, where it plans to invest about 20 trillion won ($15 billion) by 2028 to lead microprocessor technology.

The world’s largest memory chip maker said the new facility in Giheung, south of Seoul, will conduct advanced research into next-generation devices and processes for memory and system chips, as well as development of new technologies based on a roadmap for long term.

“Samsung Electronics is trying to push the limits of the semiconductor scale,” it said in a statement.

The ceremony was attended by the vice president of Samsung Electronics, Jay Y. Lee, recently pardoned for financial crimes, and the company’s top executives.

“We need to continue our tradition of investing preemptively and emphasizing technology,” Lee said during the ceremony.
