Analytical company Counterpoint Research has published a fresh report on the study of the smartphone market for the first quarter of this year. Two key changes can be distinguished in it: firstly, the South Korean giant Samsung overtook Apple as the largest supplier of smartphones, and secondly, shipments of mobile devices in the first quarter of 2022 fell sharply.
Samsung repeated last year’s success by taking a leading position in the global smartphone market. In the last quarter, the company increased the supply of devices by 8% to 74.4 million units. This allowed her to rise to the first line in the list of the largest smartphone manufacturers. Apple shipments, by contrast, are down 1% year-on-year. In the first three months of this year, the Cupertino-based company shipped 59 million of its devices.
In third place is Xiaomi, followed by OPPO and Vivo. These manufacturers are experiencing problems with components, the shortage of which has led to a decrease in their supply on a quarterly and annual basis. The best result was shown by the former Huawei sub-brand HONOR. The brand’s sales grew by 148% year on year, and in the first quarter of this year, it managed to deliver 16 million smartphones to the market. HONOR’s market share rose to 5% from just 2% a year earlier.
Overall, the global smartphone market shrank 8% year on year and 12% quarter on quarter. In the first three months of 2022, 326 million units were delivered.
