Analysts from the research company Gartner have published a new report on the state of affairs in the global semiconductor market in 2021. They calculated how much each of the top ten chipmakers earned during the past year.
According to the results of last year, the South Korean company Samsung became the leader of the semiconductor business in terms of income. Its chip manufacturing division brought in $73.1 billion in 12 months of 2021, occupying 12.3% of the global market. For the first time since 2018, Samsung overtook U.S. chipmaker Intel, which earned $72.5 billion last year and dropped to second place in chip revenue with a 12.2 percent market share.
Third place in the market of semiconductor giants was occupied by SK Hynix, whose share at the end of last year was 6.1%. Qualcomm got the fifth place. The American chipmaker generated $27.093 billion in revenue last year, taking 4.6% of the market. MediaTek earned $17.617 billion from semiconductors last year. As for NVIDIA and AMD, they round out the top ten chipmakers with revenues of $16.815 billion and $16.299 billion, respectively.
The total semiconductor market last year was $594.952 billion. This is a 26.3% increase compared to 2020, when manufacturers earned a total of $470.889 billion.
