Samsung plans to triple contract manufacturing capacity by 2026

Samsung Electronics said it plans to triple its semiconductor contract manufacturing capacity. The plan, published amid a global chip shortage affecting many products from cars to smartphones, runs until 2026.

The world’s largest chip maker by sales has said it will expand its production lines in Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul, and possibly build a new plant in the United States to meet growing demand for its contract manufacturing service.

The largest contract manufacturer is TSMC, which holds 53% of the world market. Samsung is ranked second with 17%, according to Statista analysts. GlobalFoundries is in third place with 6%.

Samsung has also confirmed that it plans to release its first 3nm chips in the first half of 2022, with the second generation of 3nm chips expected in 2023.
