According to industry sources, Samsung Electronics has increased its prices for rigid AMOLED panels by 5-8%. This is due to the lack of driver microcircuits for such panels.
The shortage has arisen because the South Korean company has yet to resume production at its Austin, Texas factory, which has been suspended since mid-February due to power outages.
Sources noted that the factory was able to process 20,000 wafers per month prior to the closure, releasing drivers for the AMOLED panels used in the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S21 smartphones.
The price hike for AMOLED panels is also in line with the current panel price hike already sweeping a-Si and LTPS LCD panels.
Prices for 6.5-inch a-Si HD + LCD panels in March rose from $ 14.0 to $ 14.1, while prices for FHD + LTPS panels of the same size rose from $ 14.7 to $ 14.8 in March. Meanwhile, prices for the 6.4-inch FHD + AMOLED display hit $ 21, according to CINNO Research.
Industry officials believe panel suppliers may continue to hike their product prices in the second half of the year as chip shortages are expected to persist.
