The shortage of chips has reached the mobile market as well. Due to the ongoing crisis in the semiconductor industry, smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2021 fell 6% year-on-year. This is stated in the new quarterly report of the research company Canalys, dedicated to the state of affairs in the global smartphone market.
According to Canalys, last quarter Samsung was able to regain its leadership in the global mobile market. Its market share over the past three months was 23%, the same as a year ago. And Xiaomi, which earlier in 2021 was able to overtake everyone in the supply of smartphones, dropped to third place. As in the case of Samsung, Xiaomi’s share has not changed over the year and still stands at 14%. But Apple was able to increase its share in 12 months by three percentage points – from 12% in the third quarter of 2020 to 15% in the third quarter of 2021. Also, two more Chinese brands – Vivo and OPPO – entered the top five leaders of the global smartphone market in the last quarter. The share of each of them has grown from 9% to 10% over the year.
The main reason for the drop in smartphone shipments between July and September, analysts at Canalys cite a shortage of components. And, in their opinion, it will take at least another year for the supply and demand for chips to align. Smartphone shipments should return to growth in the fourth holiday quarter of 2021, but due to chip shortages, sales are likely not to be as high as in previous years.
