Samsung to use recycled fishing net material in its devices

Yesterday, February 6, representatives of Samsung Electronics on the official website announced the creation of the latest material based on recycled plastic, fished from the oceans, which will be used by the manufacturer in various Galaxy devices. The South Korean giant explained that the new material is made from recycled plastic fishing nets that have been thrown into the ocean by fishing boats. Accordingly, the use of the new material allows the company not only to reduce its environmental impact, but also to clean the ocean of harmful plastic.

It is worth noting that the manufacturer has not yet announced the exact list of devices that will be assembled using the new material. Instead, Samsung has said recycled ocean plastic will be used across its entire line of new products, starting with the fresh Galaxy devices that will be unveiled at the official Unpacked event on February 9th. And while many users may think that there aren’t enough fishing nets in the ocean for even one batch of smartphones, the reality is much worse – there is so much abandoned plastic in the ocean that it will be enough for years of production.

Samsung’s press release notes that there are currently about 640 tons of plastic fishing nets in the ocean, and this insane figure continues to grow year after year. And this plastic, which has been under water for decades, not only causes irreparable damage to the inhabitants of the underwater depths and their natural habitat, but also gets into food and water, which people from all over the world then consume. So the collection and recycling of this plastic is a really important process that someone should do.
