Samsung TVs Get Smarter: Cloud Gaming, HDR10 + Gaming, and AI Video Calling

At Samsung’s developer conference, the company announced new features and services that will appear on the South Korean manufacturer’s smart TVs. One of the important areas for Samsung is gaming. The company optimizes the performance of cloud gaming on its TVs with a dedicated video streaming pipeline that controls the stream while avoiding latency. In addition, it automatically optimizes the resolution and refresh rate based on your internet connection.

Samsung is also developing an extension to include support for HDR10 + gaming on TVs. This extension will be able to automatically calibrate HDR images, instantly perform Tone Mapping and adjust the screen refresh rate to 120 Hz. What’s more, Samsung has introduced an open image quality metadata standard that provides the optimal display configuration based on what game the user is playing. This feature works both via HDMI and wireless.

The company said it is working on compatibility with a wide range of game controllers. Currently, Samsung TVs officially support over 10 gamepads, but with the addition of the standard protocol for Bluetooth and USB HID device profiles, the number should increase significantly.

In addition, Samsung pays special attention to video calling. The company has partnered with Google to improve the quality of video calls on its TVs through features such as AI focusing and zooming. It works like this: when a user connects a webcam to a Samsung smart TV, it automatically detects their face and zooms in to get the perfect shot. Samsung is also working to improve compatibility with external webcams and is even planning to add support for older smartphones for use as a webcam.

Samsung Health will also take advantage of the external webcam, adding new features such as exercise analysis and real-time workout feedback. All calculations are done locally thanks to the NPU chip, so no user data is sent to Samsung’s servers. Other functions of TVs will receive special capabilities based on artificial intelligence.
