Samsung unveils 360-degree foldable smartphone hinge

Samsung Display, a subsidiary of the South Korean display giant, showed off a new screen at CES 2023 with a thin hinge that can rotate 360 degrees. The display, marketed as Flex In & Out, folds in and out, and a new mechanism avoids noticeable creases. This is primarily due to the fact that when bent, the display takes on a freer shape, and when closed, there is a small distance between the halves.

This is not the first time Samsung Display has demonstrated a prototype 360-degree Flex In & Out display. Back in 2021, this development was highlighted at the Korean Display Industry Exhibition (IMID), but then the company’s approach was a little different – the display had several segments and folded in the shape of the letter “S”. For now, the Galaxy Z Fold4, released last August, like the entire Samsung Fold line, still uses displays that only fold in one direction.

It is possible that the new screen will appear in the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold5, and rumors are already indicating that the device will have a different hinge design with a less noticeable crease. This will make Samsung’s next foldable smartphone look more like the competition, the OPPO Find N2 and third-generation Motorola Razr.

The Galaxy Z Fold5 is expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Flip5 this August, but for now, all eyes are on the new Galaxy S23 series of flagship smartphones, which Samsung will unveil on February 1st.
