The new processor for wearable devices has become part of Samsung’s proprietary Exynos family and is called the Exynos W920.
The Exynos W920 replaces the Exynos 9110 chip introduced three years ago, which debuted in the original Samsung Galaxy Watch. The new chipset is not only more energy efficient than its predecessor, but also more efficient. It is built using Samsung’s latest 5nm manufacturing process and includes two ARM Cortex-A55 processing cores, an ARM Mali-G68 graphics accelerator, and a separate so-called low-power Cortex-M55 “display” processor for performing tasks related to Always-on Display function. Samsung claims that its new chipset delivers a 20 percent increase in CPU performance over the Exynos 9110, and the graphics performance is up to 10 times faster.
The new chip uses Fan-Out Panel Level Packaging (FO-PLP). It is the most compact “case” in the wearable electronics segment to date. This design implies the installation of the Exynos W920 chip itself, a power controller, LPDDR4 RAM and an eMMC drive on one board, which allows more efficient use of the internal space of the device. For example, manufacturers can use the free space inside the case to install a more capacious battery to increase the autonomy of smart watches.
Samsung’s new chip is compatible with qHD displays (960 by 540 pixels) and can work with Wear OS, a special operating system for wearable electronics that Google has jointly developed with Samsung. Of the wireless connections, the Exynos W920 supports 4G LTE, Wi-Fi b / g / n, Bluetooth 5.0 and GNSS satellite navigation.
