Samsung’s 576-megapixel camera will initially not be for smartphones, but for cars and drones

Samsung is the first company in the world to launch a smartphone camera with a 108 megapixel image sensor. The South Korean giant last week unveiled the world’s first 200MP image sensor called Samsung ISOCELL HP1.

Last year it was revealed that the company is working on a 600-megapixel camera, but it will not appear anytime soon. During a presentation at the SEMI Europe Summit, Haechang Lee, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics, said the company plans to release a 576-megapixel image sensor in 2025.

In addition, it looks like the 576MP camera is not being developed for smartphones, but for cars. It can also be used in drones and medical equipment, but using a smartphone as a camera is not a priority.

The South Korean company is expanding the use of image sensors. The company is currently planning to provide sensors for several categories, including autonomous vehicles, drones and IoT devices.
